Repetitive Stress Injuries (Work-related hazards)
The pain occurring in nerves, muscles, and tendons due to repetitive movements is referred to by repetitive strain injury (RSI). It can also be termed as work-related upper limb disorder or non-specific upper limb pain. Performing rigorous activities for a long time without taking a rest or operating in poor postures or awkward position increases the risk of RSI. In addition, the vibrating environment and cold temperatures can also cause RSI. Surprisingly, stress can also contribute to this. The upper body parts including wrists & hands, neck, shoulders, elbows, and others are affected in case of RSI.
Symptoms of RSI:
The symptoms of RSI range from mild to severe, and they can grow gradually. They often include:
- Pain, aching or tenderness
- Tingling or numbness
Symptoms can be mild in the first few stages and grow with time is the same repetitive action is performed. If they are ignored, they become responsible for the long duration of the pain.
The course of action to be taken for RSI:
There are certain steps that can be taken if you experience symptoms of RSI. These include taking it out to the employer or occupational health representative. They would advise you on performing repetitive tasks in a certain way to avoid the symptoms. Else, you can visit a physical therapist. The physiotherapists at our clinic have expertise in treating RSI, book an appointment soon.
Prevention of RSI:
It is essential to create a comfortable environment that will give the right posture and does not put excessive strain. Employers can conduct a risk assessment to determine the work environment is comfortable for employees. Taking small and regular breaks from sedentary and repetitive tasks will be helpful. If the job profile involves stress, then performing some relaxation techniques will be helpful.
Treatment of RSI:
The first step of treatment of RSI includes identification of the tasks or activities that cause the symptoms. Then perform those activities with right postures and positions. If necessary, you may be required to stop that activity altogether. Doctors may prescribe a dose of anti-inflammatory painkillers (such as aspirin or ibuprofen), or usage of heat or cold pack, elastic support, or others to relieve symptoms. However, they are in temporary ways.
Physiotherapists have a vast amount of knowledge about RSI related symptoms and they can conduct a thorough examination to help you eliminate the pain you are suffering from. They advise you on posture and relaxation & strengthening techniques for your muscles.
